  Executive Summary:

State of the Black Family

In 1965 the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan published his groundbreaking federal study, “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action.”[1] In its opening sentence the report stated, “At the heart of the deterioration of the fabric of Negro society is the deterioration of the Negro family.” Since then, that deterioration has accelerated dramatically.  Today, only 17 percent of black teenagers reach age 17 in a family with both their biological parents married.[2] In this publication, we show the state of the black family over the decades. Compared to other races/ ethnicities, black families have experienced and continue to experience significant decay.  This report additionally contrasts how blacks from a variety of family structures rank on social outcome measures, like education, income, health, and government dependency. _______________________________________________________ [1]http://www.dol.gov/oasam/programs/history/webid-meynihan.htm [2] www.marri.us/index-2015]]>
